Like many others, you may have stumbled across this little corner of the internet and thought, Wait… The Upward Blip? What does that even mean? Is this a blog about stocks, bonds, or tech data? Who came up with that?
Well, as the founder and resident chaotic coordinator here, I can confirm the blame lands entirely on me.
If you’ve ever wondered about the story behind the name, grab a cup of coffee—hopefully still hot—and let me pull back the curtain.
“Family life is messy, but it’s beautiful. Let’s keep finding the upward blips together.”
~Yours truly
From Lab Coats to Little Shoes
Before I was managing toddler routines and tracking down missing shoes, I spent nearly two decades in a completely different world: the medical laboratory. I worked as a medical laboratory scientist in a hospital, where the steady bleeping of monitors became part of the rhythm of everyday life.
In a hospital setting, you get very used to hearing one specific sound: the rhythmic bleeping of monitors. To a lot of people, that sound is just background noise—or maybe even a source of anxiety. But to me? That steady little blip has always represented hope. A quiet reminder that, even when a situation looks critical or uncertain, there’s still movement. Still life. Still a reason to keep going.
When I think about it, that is roughly half of my entire life. That is, in fact, the determining factor for the name. It’s common to hear the bleeping sound in a hospital setting. That bleeping sound represents hope to me. A hopeful expectation that, despite the difficulties, everything will be fine as long as the bleep continues.
So, one dry South Dakota midsummer, The Upward Blip was born.
What Exactly Is an “Upward Blip”?
To me, an upward blip is that brief little sign of progress—a bright spot in the middle of something hard, messy, or just plain exhausting.
And honestly, is there any better way to describe motherhood?
Finding Calm in the Chaos
Motherhood is a wild, messy, beautiful ride. Some days feel like one long stretch of pure exhaustion. But then, every now and then, you get an upward blip:
- A toddler bedtime routine that actually goes smoothly.
- A morning where baby prep doesn’t completely fall apart.
- Five uninterrupted minutes to drink your coffee while it’s still hot.
This site is designed to be your little corner of calm in the chaos. I want to help you find those small upward blips in your daily routine through practical tips, fun freebies, and plenty of gentle encouragement.
We might not have it all together, but as long as we keep moving upward, we’re doing just fine.
